Refiles

Streamline tax filings by understanding the refile process and automated tracking updates.

What is a refile?

A refile occurs when we attempt to process a tax filing with an agency after resolving an issue that previously prevented it from being filed successfully.

This can happen for several reasons, but most common reasons include:

  1. The filing was submitted but rejected by the agency, and the underlying issue has now been fixed.
  1. The filing could not be submitted initially because required information or eligibility was missing (for example, a missing tax ID or a company not in good standing).

Once the issue is resolved, the filing is prepared and submitted again to the agency. This attempt is called a refile.

How refiles are processed

We recently updated how refiles are processed to make them faster and easier to track.

Previously, refiles were requested and handled end-to-end through a ticket, with each request processed individually. As of March 2026, when you submit a ticket for a Refile request, Support may will prepare a refile for filing, then it is queued and processed automatically in bulk.

Automatic refile processing

If a filing is blocked for Applied For or Company Not in Good Standing, and the issue is resolved - meaning the associated tax account number is entered into the system or the funding issue is resolved, the filing will automatically move into Pending status and do not require a ticket request that the refile be processed.

Because of this change, tickets are no longer used to track refile progress. You can monitor filing progress in three ways:

  • Console – you can view the latest status under the Tax Filings tab
  • API – you retrieve the filing status programmatically through the Tax Filings API
  • Webhooks – receive notifications whenever a filing status changes, if configured.

View All Filings at a Glance

The Tax Filings main page provides a complete view of all filings for a company. Each row includes the filing period and form, current status, due date, filed date (if applicable), and whether the filing is an original or an amendment. Use the filters at the top of the table to quickly narrow filings by status, period, or year.

Filings can have the following statuses:

  • Pending — The filing is scheduled and will be processed before the due date
  • Blocked — The filing cannot be completed due to missing data (where Check is unable to file) or invalid data (where Check submitted a filing and it was rejected)
  • Processing — The filing is currently being processed
  • Filed — The filing has been successfully submitted
  • Filed Late — The filing was submitted after the due date
