Tax Filings in Console

Streamline your tax processes with the centralized Tax Filings feature in Console.

What is Tax Filings in Console?

The Tax Filings section in Console provides full visibility into all of your company's tax filings in one centralized view. Built on the Tax Filings API, this section of Console allows you to see upcoming, blocked, and filed tax returns—including refiles and amendments—without needing to cross-reference multiple reports or documents.

Previously, partners used a combination of Failed Filing reports and Company Documents to piece together filing information. Tax Filings in Console replaces this fragmented experience with a single source of truth.

Coming soon: the ability to download a copy of the filing from this view. For now, you can continue to access filing copies from the Documents tab.

Key Capabilities

View All Filings at a Glance

The Tax Filings main page provides a complete view of all filings for a company. Each row includes the filing period and form, current status, due date, filed date (if applicable), and whether the filing is an original or an amendment. Use the filters at the top of the table to quickly narrow filings by status, period, or year.

Filings can have the following statuses:

  • Pending — The filing is scheduled and will be processed before the due date
  • Blocked — The filing cannot be completed due to missing data (where Check is unable to file) or invalid data (where Check submitted a filing and it was rejected)
  • Processing — The filing is currently being processed
  • Filed — The filing has been successfully submitted
  • Filed Late — The filing was submitted after the due date

Filing Detail View

Selecting a filing opens the Filing Detail view, which shows key filing information including the filing ID, name and period, current status with full status history, due date, filed date, and filing type (original or amendment).

Blocked Filing Resolution

If a filing is blocked, the detail view displays:

  • A banner explaining why the filing is blocked
  • The specific blocker reason (e.g., "Applied for tax ID")
  • For missing Applied For tax IDs in jurisdictions where they are required, a direct link to resolve the issue (e.g., navigate to Setup Parameters to add the ID)
💡

Blocked filings will not be completed until all blockers are resolved. Use the linked resolution path to address missing data.

Amendment Linkage

For amendments, the detail view shows:

  • Amendments of — Links to the original filing(s) being amended
  • Amended by — Links to any subsequent amendments of this filing

This linkage makes it easy to trace the full history of a filing and its corrections.

Managing Filings

Opting Out of a Filing

If Check is planning to file a return that should not apply to the company (e.g., the company files independently or has no tax liability), you can opt out directly from Console.

Notion image

To opt out:

  1. Open the filing detail view
  1. Under Manage Filing, click Click Opt-out from filing
  1. Confirm the opt-out action

Opt-out rules:

  • You can only opt out of filings where the company has zero wages for the filing period
  • Opt-outs are available until Check begins processing the filing (typically in the second week of each Quarter End filing month)
  • Opting out of an amendment is not supported
  • Federal W-2 filings cannot be opted out
⚠️

Once Check begins processing a filing, the opt-out option is disabled. Review your upcoming filings before processing begins.

FAQs

Can I opt out of a filing if the company has wages for that period?

No. Opting out is only supported when the company has zero wages for the filing period. If wages exist, Check is required to file on behalf of the company.

How do I know if a filing is blocked before it fails?

Blocked filings appear with a "Blocked" status in the Tax Filings table. Open the filing detail to see the specific reason and resolution steps.

Why is there no failed status for a filing?

Any filing that cannot be completed is in “Blocked” status. What has historically be referred to as a failed filing is any filing in “Blocked” status that has had at least one filing attempt.

Can I opt out of a filing via the API?

Not currently. Opt-out functionality is only available in Console. API support is likely be added in the future.
