Bank Holidays
Understand how bank holidays affect payroll schedules and adjust check dates accordingly.
Bank Holidays Overview
We all look forward to holidays. Before we all enjoy some much needed time off, it’s important to understand how the holidays impact payroll schedules.
To prevent a check date from occurring when Check is unable to move funds, Check will not allow a payroll to be created with a payday that falls on a banking holiday. If an employer has a check date that falls on a banking holiday, we recommend moving the payday back to the preceding business day. For example, if your company is paid on every Thursday throughout the year, on the week of Thanksgiving the check date should be set to Wednesday.
Timelines:
The impact of holidays on the processing periods and approval deadlines are outlined below.
3-day processing: 3-day processing typically means that a company is approving on a Tuesday by 3pm ET for a Friday check date. When Friday is a holiday, the check date would be moved to Thursday, approval would now be Monday at 3pm ET.
2-day processing: If the scheduled check date falls on a Thursday holiday, the adjusted check date will be Wednesday. For 2-day (accelerated processing companies) the deadline is now Monday.
Notification:
Check’s payday API will notify users if the approval deadline is impacted by a holiday. (See our Holidays chart below for a list of holidays in the coming years).
We recommend that you over communicate the occurrence of holidays to companies processing payroll. This will help them prepare to approve their payrolls in a timely manner, and to consider other miscellaneous items like holiday pay, overtime and even scheduling.
