How to use the Invalid SSN Report
Run the Invalid SSN Report to proactively identify and clean up invalid employee records.
Overview
The Invalid SSNs Report flags employees or contractors whose Social Security Numbers (SSNs) meet known invalid criteria. You can run this report at both the provider and employer levels. The report helps partners proactively clean up data ahead of filings and prevent issues tied to invalid employee or contractor records.

What is an invalid SSN?
An SSN is considered invalid if it meets one or more of the following criteria:
- Begins with 9, 666, or 000
- Has 00 in the fourth and fifth digits
- Has 0000 in the last four digits
- Consists of identical digits (e.g., 111-11-1111)
Check does not flag SSNs as incorrect unless they match one of the patterns above.
What is the Invalid SSNs Report?
This report identifies any employees or contractors with SSNs that match the invalid criteria listed above. It is available in CSV format and can be downloaded for further review.
You can run the report for:
- All companies at the provider level
- A specific company at the employer level

Employee Name | First and last name of the employee |

Company Legal Name | IRS-registered legal name |
Company Trade Name | DBA name, if applicable |
When to use this report
Run the Invalid SSNs Report in the following scenarios:
- Ahead of quarter-end to ensure all SSNs are valid before filing
- When onboarding new employees or contractors to verify data integrity
- During routine employee or contractor audits to maintain clean records
How to run the report in Console
At the provider level
- Click Reports in the left-hand navigation
- Find and click View under Invalid SSNs Report
- Select from the filter options:
- Employee Invalid SSNs Report
- Contractor Invalid SSNs Report
- Download the CSV
At the company level
- Navigate to the company and go to the Reports tab
- Expand the Invalid SSNs section
- Select from the filter options:
- Employee Invalid SSNs Report
- Contractor Invalid SSNs Report
- Download the CSV
FAQs
How can I see the full SSN that was originally entered?
Check's Console does not display full SSNs for security reasons. If you need access to the unmasked SSN for verification or correction:
- Submit a support ticket to Check or leverage the Sensitive Data API
How do I update the SSN?
To update an SSN in Console:
- Go to the Employees tab
- Select the employee
- Click the pencil icon next to the employee's name
- Enter the correct SSN
- Click Save
