Check's Unsupported Features and Taxes
Explore unsupported features and taxes for Check to streamline customer onboarding effectively.
Below is a list of all of the features that Check does not support today. Note, it's possible that there may be items not on this list that we also don't support given the large universe of payroll features, however, this guide should be a solid resource for you to filter out any customers that have these requirements.
We strongly recommend before you onboard any customers that you review their payroll journals and ensure there is nothing they need supported that is on this list.
Unsupported Features
Types of Workers
Note: Unless otherwise noted, these are hard blockers, meaning that Check cannot support them at all.
- Household employees
- Non-resident aliens (Exception: We could onboard this worker if they have an SSN, but they would be under-taxed)
- Government employees (including but not limited to: public school teachers and administrators, public librarians and administrators, police officers, fire fighters, city or county clerks, environmental protection officers, postal workers, public works employees in sanitation and/or water treatment, department of motor vehicles staff etc)
- Railroad employees
- H-2B visa workers
- Employees or contractors that have an address located in Puerto Rico and the US Territories
- Check doesn’t support any special taxation for American Indians or individuals working on tribal reservations
Types of Companies
Note: Unless otherwise noted, these are hard blockers, meaning that Check cannot support them at all.
- Government and Federal contractors
- PEOs (or companies migrating from certain PEOs)
- Nevada Financial Institutions
- Companies located in Puerto Rico and the US Territories
- Pass-through entities
- Companies with over 2,000 active or inactive workers on a single EIN.
- Note: This limit is restricted to onboarding. If a company grows over this amount, we will not remove them from the platform.
- A single payroll can have a maximum of 1,500 payroll items. Read our API documentation for more information.
- Common Paymaster
Types of Industries
Note: Unless otherwise noted, these are hard blockers, meaning that Check cannot support them at all.
- Gambling, including online gaming, lottery, games of chance, fantasy sports leagues, etc.
- Marijuana sales or dispensaries
- Sale of guns and/or ammunition
- Sale of flammable and combustible substances
- Drug paraphernalia used to produce or consume controlled substances, including bongs or glass pipes commonly used to consume marijuana
- Adult entertainment business which either directly or indirectly provide sex-related services
- Virtual currency (e.g., Bitcoin) and related services
- Sales, distribution, or access to counterfeit music, movies, software, or other licensed materials without the appropriate authorization from the rights holder
- Shell banks
- Bearer share companies (and employers operating as such), except for those that are publicly traded on a recognized exchange
Features
Note: These are soft blockers, meaning that Check can still support these companies, but they would not have access to these features.
- Tax deferrals — some states allow for taxes to be deferred to later in the year than when due based on certain employer qualifications.
- Applying tax credit balances to future quarter’s liabilities
- Tax withholdings or deductions, including child support deductions, from contractor payments
- Automated remittance of child support garnishments to tribal support agencies
- Automated remittance of non-child support garnishment types (e.g. tax liens)
- New hire reporting for contractors
- State-specific service member (or spouse) exemption forms
- NQDC plans (non-qualified deferred compensation plans)
- Tiered 401(k) matching
- 408(k)
- Qualified Small Employer Health Reimbursement Arrangement (QSEHRA) reimbursements
- Cobra benefits/reporting
- ACA reporting
- W-4 Lock-in Letters
- Net to Gross Wage Calculation
- EITC Notices
- Predecessor/successor/ "Transfer of Experience" handling (941/W-2 reconciliations due to acquisitions)
- Self tax payment and/or filing outside of Check
- SUI out of state wage credits
- Employer Simple IRA match
- Worksite reporting
- Certified reporting
- Optional PFML contribution rates
- PA local combined tax filings to one collector regardless of work location
- CA voluntary disability plan
