Taxes You Must Register For

If you’re starting a business with employees in Maine, you need to register for:

  1. Maine State Income Withholding Tax
  1. Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax
  1. Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) – effective January 1, 2025

Tax Type: State Income Withholding Tax

✅ Registration Steps

  1. Visit: https://revenue.maine.gov/_/
  1. Click “Register a Business”
  1. Select “I want to: Register a Business”
  1. Enter business details including FEIN, contact info, etc.
  1. Submit your registration
  1. Wait for a confirmation letter via mail (within 20 business days)

Once received, update your tax profile with your Withholding Account Number

Tax Type: Unemployment Insurance (UI)

✅ Registration Steps

  1. Go to: https://assist.reemployme.maine.gov/ep/landing
  1. Click “Register a New Business”
  1. Create username and password
  1. Complete employer details
  1. Submit the application
  1. Your Employer Account Number (EAN) will arrive by mail
⚠️ Seasonal and non-seasonal employers will receive separate EANs

Update your tax profile with your EAN for accurate payroll filing

Tax Type: PFML contributions (effective 2025)

2025 Contribution Rates:

  • Employers with <15 employees: 0.5% total
  • Employers with 15+ employees: 1% total

Once registered, update your tax account
